Hodgkinson – Peter’s Plot stands for characterful red wines from Priorat, one of Catalonia’s most distinctive wine regions. The winery is located in Falset and works with grape varieties closely associated with this origin: Garnacha Tinta, Cariñena and Garnacha Peluda. The wines show the typical structure of Priorat – concentrated, mineral-driven and with pronounced depth.
The Hodgkinson family focuses on careful work in the vineyard. In the steep terraced sites of Priorat, viticulture is strongly shaped by manual labour. Low rainfall, poor soils and low yields lead to grapes with high aromatic density. In the cellar, the wines are given sufficient time to develop maturity and structure, including long ageing in French barriques.
Priorat: DOQ origin, Llicorella and winegrowing history
Priorat is one of the few Spanish wine regions with DOQ status, the country’s highest quality classification. The region is located in Catalonia, in the province of Tarragona, and is shaped by steep terraced vineyards, low rainfall and the characteristic Llicorella slate soils. These poor soils store heat, encourage deep rooting of the vines and contribute to the concentration, mineral depth and structure of the wines.
The winegrowing history of Priorat reaches far back. The Cartoixa d’Escaladei is regarded as the historical cradle of the region; Carthusian monks brought winegrowing knowledge from Provence here as early as the 12th century. This long tradition still forms the background today for the artisanal red wines made from Garnacha, Cariñena and related grape varieties.
Garnacha Peluda and classic Priorat grape varieties
Garnacha Peluda, a rare mutation of Garnacha Tinta, plays a special role at Hodgkinson – Peter’s Plot. It owes its name to the hairy leaves of the vine. In the poor Llicorella slate soils of Priorat, this grape variety shows an individual expression with dark fruit, spice, mineral depth and elegant structure.
The Garnacha Peluda Priorat DOQ is vinified as a single-varietal wine at Hodgkinson and aged for 24 months in French barriques. Mas del Habanero Priorat DOQ additionally shows the classic combination of Garnacha Tinta and Cariñena: Garnacha brings fruit, warmth and fullness, while Cariñena adds structure, freshness and spicy depth.
Maturity and ageing in barrique
The wines of Hodgkinson – Peter’s Plot are aged with long maturation periods. Ageing in French barriques supports structure, depth and development potential without masking the origin. This approach is particularly defining for the Garnacha Peluda Priorat DOQ, which matures for 24 months in French barriques.
Mas del Habanero Priorat DOQ also follows this line. The cuvée of 85% Garnacha Tinta and 15% Cariñena is aged for 24 to 36 months in French barriques. This results in a concentrated yet accessible Priorat with dark fruit, balsamic and mineral notes, spice and tobacco nuances, as well as a long, smooth finish.
