Fam. Pierre-Alain Mathier, Vins et Vignobles Julius, Salgesch

The Pierre-Alain Mathier family and their winery Vins et Vignobles Julius in Salgesch represent quality-oriented winemaking in Valais. The focus lies on craftsmanship, small production volumes and a clear emphasis on origin, grape variety and expression. Tradition and modern approaches are consciously combined.

The winery is rooted in the long-standing winemaking tradition of Valais while remaining open to new developments. The combination of experience, regional identity and openness to innovation defines the stylistic direction of its wines.

Origin & Terroir in Valais

Valais is the most important wine-growing region in Switzerland, with around 5,000 hectares of vineyards, and one of the most distinctive. This alpine valley is among the driest regions of the country and is characterised by intense sunshine. Significant temperature differences between day and night support the aromatic development of the grapes and contribute to balanced acidity.

The vineyards of Vins et Vignobles Julius are spread across various sites, including Salgesch, Sion and Sierre. These locations differ in altitude, soil composition and microclimate. Soils of limestone, schist, granite and gneiss shape the wines, giving them structure, minerality and depth.

The often terraced vineyards require a high level of manual work. Vineyard management is therefore precise and site-specific, allowing each plot to express its full potential.

History & Origin of the Name

The roots of winemaking in Valais date back to Roman times. It is believed that Roman legions introduced viticulture to this alpine valley, laying the foundation for today’s wine region. The name “Julius” reflects this historical connection and refers to the long-standing tradition of winemaking in Valais.

This historical perspective is not merely symbolic but part of an ongoing process in which tradition and contemporary practices are closely linked.

Grape Varieties & Style

In the vineyard, the winery focuses on a combination of international and indigenous grape varieties. Alongside Pinot Noir, Merlot and Petite Arvine, Cornalin plays an important role – a distinctive Valais specialty known for its structure and spicy character. This range is complemented by other regional varieties that reflect the diversity of Valais.

The aim is to preserve the identity of each grape variety while clearly expressing the influence of the terroir. The wines are therefore not driven by extraction or technical intensity, but by balance, origin and drinkability.

Vinification takes place mainly in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness, clarity and fruit. Selected wines are additionally aged in barrique, adding structure, depth and ageing potential. The use of oak remains supportive and does not dominate the style.
