Château La Bonnelle – Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from Saint-Pey-d'Armens
Château La Bonnelle is located in Saint-Pey-d'Armens in the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation, on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Built in the 19th century, the château is surrounded by 13 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards are planted mainly with Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc, and some of the vines are more than 40 years old. Saint-Émilion is one of the classic appellations of Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Merlot traditionally plays a central role here, bringing fruit, richness and roundness to the wines. At Château La Bonnelle, this style is complemented by Cabernet Franc, which contributes structure, freshness and spice.
Terroir of Château La Bonnelle
The vineyards of Château La Bonnelle are planted on clay, gravel, iron-rich sandy components and deep gravel layers. These soils support fruit, structure and tannin ripeness. Together with the high proportion of Merlot, they produce a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru with richness, roundness and good length. The estate works with a planting density of around 6,000 vines per hectare. The older vines, careful vineyard management and soil structure all contribute to wines that show power, balance and a clear sense of origin.
Vineyard Work & Ageing
The vineyards are grassed and maintained with organic fertilisation on a rotational basis. Vineyard work includes double Guyot pruning, spring shoot thinning, manual tying and leaf removal, as well as green harvesting when required. The grapes are harvested by hand. In the cellar, they are destemmed and carefully sorted. Cold maceration helps to extract the fruit aromas. Fermentation takes place in small, temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, allowing the different terroirs and levels of ripeness to be handled separately. After fermentation and warm maceration, the wines are transferred into barriques together with the fine lees. Ageing takes place for 18 months in French oak barriques, one third of which are renewed each year. Part of the wood used for the barriques comes from the estate’s own forestry in the Dordogne. Bottling and storage take place at the château.
The Wine Style of Château La Bonnelle
Château La Bonnelle stands for a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru with fruit, structure and balanced tannins. The style combines dark fruit, spice, fine toasted notes and a clear Bordeaux structure. On the palate, the wines show power and balance without appearing heavy. The blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc expresses the typical style of Bordeaux’s Right Bank: Merlot brings richness, fruit and suppleness, while Cabernet Franc adds freshness, spice and length. Ageing in French oak barriques gives the wine additional depth, tannic finesse and ageing potential.
