Herdade dos Coteis – Wines from the Alentejo

Herdade dos Coteis is located in southern Portugal in the Alentejo, near Moura on the left bank of the River Guadiana. The estate, run by the Venâncio family, comprises more than 300 hectares of olive groves and 23 hectares of vineyards. The landscape of this region is characterised by broad plains, gentle hills, vineyards, olive trees and cork oak groves. The Alentejo is one of Portugal’s major wine regions and is known for its warm climate, expansive landscapes and wines with ripe fruit, richness and an accessible structure. Herdade dos Coteis works exclusively with estate-grown grapes. This ensures a clear and traceable connection between vineyard, grape variety and cellar work.

Alentejo Terroir: The Guadiana, Olive Groves and Cork Oaks

The vineyards of Herdade dos Coteis lie in a landscape where viticulture, olive groves and cork oaks are closely intertwined. The warm, dry climate of the Alentejo promotes good grape ripeness, while the work in the cellar is focused on preserving a balanced combination of fruit, freshness and structure. Indigenous varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet and Arinto grow in the vineyards alongside international varieties such as Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc. This combination makes it possible to produce a range that includes both fresh white wines and fruit-driven, full-bodied red wines.

Grape Varieties and Style

The wines of Herdade dos Coteis show a clear Alentejo style. The Branco combines Arinto and Sauvignon Blanc with citrus fruit, tropical notes and lively freshness. The red wines are based on Touriga Nacional, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet and show dark fruit, spice, soft to well-integrated tannins and a full-bodied structure. Ageing is deliberately adapted to each wine. The Tinto remains more focused on fruit and immediate accessibility, while the Reserva and Grande Escolha gain greater depth, toasted aromas, spice and structure through ageing in French and American oak barriques. The overall style remains composed and balanced, with fruit and origin at the forefront.
