Komminoth Weine, Maienfeld

Komminoth Weine from Maienfeld is one of the quality-focused family wineries of the Bündner Herrschaft and stands for characterful Swiss wines with a clear sense of origin. Since 1980, wines have been crafted on approximately 4.6 hectares of vineyards, consistently focused on grape variety, vineyard site and vintage. The estate combines artisanal vineyard work with precise vinification and follows a clear stylistic philosophy: structured, balanced wines with expression and ageing potential. Pinot Noir in particular, alongside selected white grape varieties, shapes the profile of this Bündner producer.

Origin & Terroir

The Bündner Herrschaft in the Rhine Valley near Chur is one of Switzerland’s most important wine regions and is internationally renowned for Pinot Noir. The alpine climate is strongly influenced by the Föhn wind, which creates dry conditions and extends the ripening period. Warm days and cool nights promote aromatic development while preserving freshness in the grapes. The soils of limestone, clay, glacial gravel and crystalline rock give the wines structure, minerality and a clear, precise style. The vineyard parcels around Maienfeld are small and individually managed. Each parcel is vinified separately in order to highlight the distinctive character of every site.

Viticulture & Philosophy

Work in the vineyard is carried out largely by hand and is based on a respectful approach to nature and soil. Healthy vines and sustainable cultivation form the foundation for the quality of the grapes. In the cellar, Komminoth follows a restrained approach: each vineyard site is matured separately in order to preserve its individual character. The goal is to create wines that authentically reflect origin, structure and vintage.

Komminoth Weine stands for a precise, terroir-driven interpretation of the Bündner Herrschaft. The combination of small vineyard parcels, artisanal craftsmanship and a clearly defined style makes the estate a typical representative of alpine Swiss viticulture with its own distinctive signature.

Grape Varieties & Style

At the heart of the portfolio is Pinot Noir (Blauburgunder), which finds ideal conditions in the Bündner Herrschaft and is interpreted through different ageing styles – from classic stainless steel vinification to complex barrique ageing. The range is complemented by white wines such as Riesling-Silvaner, Chardonnay and Scheurebe, as well as modern cuvées. These wines display clear aromatics, precise fruit and a balanced acidity structure typical of alpine Swiss viticulture. Paul Komminoth’s wines are concentrated, structured and designed for development over time. Characteristic is the combination of freshness, minerality and depth – always with a focus on balance and origin.
