Legio Julius by Vins et Vignobles Julius SA from Salgesch in Valais stands for a modern interpretation of Swiss winemaking. The project combines Valais origin with international grape varieties and shows how diversely the terroir of Valais can be interpreted today. Inspired by the Roman history of the region and the Legio XII Fulminata, Legio Julius follows an independent approach: tradition is preserved, but deliberately expanded through new grape varieties, cuvées and vinification methods. At the centre are wines with clear fruit, balanced structure and international character. Alongside classic Valais varieties, deliberately unconventional grape varieties such as Arneis, Lagrein, Primitivo and Malbec are used. The result is distinctive wines that present Valais from a contemporary perspective.
Origin & terroir in Valais
Salgesch is one of the important wine-growing villages of Valais. The dry, sunny climate, the large temperature differences between day and night and the poor soils create ideal conditions for ripe, aromatic grapes with clear structure. These natural conditions shape the wines of Legio Julius with fruit, freshness and a clear sense of origin. Thanks to its alpine location and climatic diversity, Valais provides a special foundation for both classic and international grape varieties. Legio Julius makes targeted use of this potential to create cuvées that combine regional identity with modern stylistics.
Vinification & stylistics
Vinification combines traditional craftsmanship with modern cellar technology. Many wines are aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness, fruit and varietal typicity.
