Producer: Castello di Bolgheri

Castello di Bolgheri is one of the historically defining wineries of the region and is closely linked to the development of the appellation. The vineyards extend over around 60 hectares and are located in the immediate vicinity of the Castello in Castagneto Carducci. Under the direction of Federico Zileri and in collaboration with oenologist Alessandro Dondi, structured, long-lived wines with a clear sense of origin are produced here. The vineyards border renowned estates such as Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, San Guido (Sassicaia) and Guado al Tasso. The wines are bottled only in suitable vintages – a consistent commitment to quality that is reflected in their style.

FAQ

What stylistically defines Varvàra Bolgheri DOC?
The wine shows an elegant and balanced Bolgheri style with clear fruit, fine spice and harmoniously integrated tannins. The blend combines structure and finesse into a precise overall expression.

How is Varvàra Bolgheri DOC vinified?
The wine is aged in barriques for 12 months. This maturation period gives it structure and depth without overshadowing the fruit and supports a balanced development of the tannins.

What role do the grape varieties play in this wine?
Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure and depth, Merlot provides fullness and a soft texture, Cabernet Franc adds freshness and spice, while Petit Verdot contributes colour and additional complexity. Together they create a layered and balanced blend.

What is the ideal serving temperature?
Serve at 16-18°C so that the aromatics, structure and balance can unfold with precision.

When does Varvàra Bolgheri DOC 2023 (37.5 cl) reach its best drinking window?
The 2023 vintage shows clear fruit and a balanced structure and is already approachable. Within its ageing potential, it will develop additional depth and finely tuned balance.

Which dishes pair particularly well with this wine?
It pairs especially well with dark meat, lamb, ragouts and richly seasoned pasta dishes, as its structure and aromatic depth ideally complement these foods.

What makes the Bolgheri region special?
The proximity to the sea, gravelly soils and Mediterranean climate create ideal conditions for structured yet elegant red wines with a clear sense of origin and balanced ripeness.

What are the advantages of the 37.5 cl bottle?
The smaller bottle size is ideal for one to two people and allows high-quality wines to be enjoyed without long storage. It is also particularly practical for spontaneous moments of enjoyment or tastings where a smaller quantity is preferred.

Why does the 37.5 cl bottle have a shorter ageing potential?
The smaller bottle size leads to faster wine development, as the ratio of oxygen to wine is higher than in larger formats. As a result, the wine reaches its optimal drinking phase earlier.
