Gabriel Meffre – Wines from the Rhône Valley Since 1936

Gabriel Meffre was founded in 1936 by Gabriel Meffre and his wife Juliette in Gigondas. The Maison is closely connected to the wine-growing landscapes of the Rhône Valley and today operates both as a producer and as a Négociant-Éleveur. Its historical roots lie in the southern Rhône around Gigondas and the Dentelles de Montmirail, while the range also extends to important appellations of the northern Rhône. Origin, grape variety and the characteristics of the individual vineyard parcels form the basis for different wine ranges and styles. Alongside the classic Gabriel Meffre range, the Maison also includes the parcel-focused Laurus range and Domaine de Longue Toque. As a result, the portfolio extends from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas to Côte Rôtie and selected wines from the south of France. Vinification and ageing are tailored to each individual wine rather than following a uniform approach.

Rhône Valley Terroir: Gigondas, Dentelles de Montmirail and Diverse Vineyard Sites

Gabriel Meffre is based in Gigondas at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail. Different altitudes, exposures and geological formations create a diverse terroir here. This is particularly evident at Domaine de Longue Toque, whose vineyards are spread across different areas around the Dentelles. Depending on the site, limestone, marl, sand and stony soils are combined with varying altitudes and exposures. Beyond Gigondas, Gabriel Meffre also works with different wine-growing areas throughout the Rhône. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the vineyards are shaped by sand, limestone, clay and the appellation’s characteristic rounded stones, among other soil types. In the northern Rhône, Côte Rôtie presents a different picture: the Laurus selection brings together parcels from the Côte Brune with its schist soils and sites in the Côte Blonde characterised by gneiss and loess. This diversity of origins is an essential part of the portfolio.

Gabriel Meffre Wine Style

Gabriel Meffre works with different grape varieties and ageing methods depending on the origin and style of each wine. In the southern Rhône, classic varieties such as Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre take centre stage, while Syrah plays the central role in Côte Rôtie. With Laurus Viognier Pays d’Oc, the Maison also presents a white, aromatic side of its portfolio. The Laurus range is based on selected vineyard parcels and places particular emphasis on the relationship between grape variety and terroir. Ageing is carefully tailored to each individual wine. Domaine de Longue Toque, meanwhile, represents the Maison’s own vineyards around Gigondas. After many years of working according to Terra Vitis principles, the Domaine converted to organic viticulture and has been certified organic since 2020.

Gabriel Meffre Wines at a Glance

The buonvino.gmbh range includes selected wines from Gabriel Meffre that showcase different origins and wine ranges within the Maison:

  • Saint-Théodoric Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOP– a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre with ripe fruit, spicy notes, a fine tannin structure and ageing partly in oak and partly in tanks
  • Laurus Côte Rôtie AOP – 100% Syrah from selected parcels in the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde, with red fruit, black pepper, liquorice and a long finish
  • Laurus Viognier Pays d’Oc IGP – 100% Viognier from selected parcels in the Hérault. Pear, floral nuances and dried apricot combine with freshness, subtle salinity and a long finish.
  • Domaine de Longue Toque Gigondas AOP– a certified organic blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre with raspberries, blackberries, velvety tannins and a hint of cedarwood

This selection reveals different sides of Gabriel Meffre: structured red wines from the southern Rhône, a terroir-driven Syrah from Côte Rôtie, an aromatic Viognier and a certified organic Gigondas from Domaine de Longue Toque.

Origin, Ageing and Character

Gabriel Meffre combines its historical roots in Gigondas with different terroirs of the northern and southern Rhône as well as selected wine-growing areas in the south of France. The wines are not produced according to a uniform ageing concept: depending on the grape variety, origin and desired style, tanks, concrete vessels and different forms of oak ageing are used. This allows the differences between the individual wines and appellations to remain clearly recognisable.

The red wines range from fruit-driven, spicy blends from the southern Rhône to structured Syrah from Côte Rôtie. Laurus Viognier complements the portfolio with a full-flavoured white wine displaying floral and yellow-fruit aromas. With Domaine de Longue Toque, Gabriel Meffre also demonstrates its close connection to its own vineyards in Gigondas and to organic viticulture.

Depending on their style, Gabriel Meffre wines pair well with red meat, lamb, game, grilled dishes, poultry, fish, shellfish and mature cheese. They are aimed at wine lovers who wish to explore the Rhône Valley through different appellations, grape varieties and terroirs – from Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape to Côte Rôtie.
