Producer: Komminoth Weine, Maienfeld
Since the Komminoth family pressed its first own wine in Maienfeld in 1980, the enthusiasm for wines from the Bündner Herrschaft has been unbroken. From year to year, the quality of the wines has been further developed with great passion and dedication. Today, Komminoth is counted among the finest addresses in the Bündner Herrschaft, cultivating approximately 4.6 hectares of vineyards. Paul Komminoth describes his winemaking philosophy: "From the very beginning, I sought my own style. I ferment my vineyard parcels separately and strive to produce full-bodied, robust wines that are also capable of ageing. Each year has its own face; from each I try to get the optimum, with craftsmanship, respect for nature, an intensive relationship with the vines, and the preservation of healthy soil." With Lindorna Bella, Paul Komminoth demonstrates that he is also open to modern and innovative ideas.
The Bündner Herrschaft – shaped by warm Föhn winds, limestone-rich soils, and an exceptional terroir – provides ideal conditions for the maturation of Pinot Noir and Syrah. Komminoth harnesses this potential with artisanal precision and a sustainable approach to viticulture.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Maienfeld Syrah Barrique Graubünden AOC
What makes the Maienfeld Syrah Barrique stylistically distinctive?
This wine combines the spicy, peppery typicity of the Syrah grape with the alpine minerality of the Bündner Herrschaft. The 12-month barrique ageing imparts structure, depth, and elegant toasty notes without overshadowing the vibrant primary fruit aromas.
How is the Maienfeld Syrah Barrique vinified?
The grapes are first macerated in stainless steel tanks, then the wine matures for 12 months in new and used barriques. This combination allows for gentle extraction and controlled oxidation, giving the wine complexity and cellaring ability.
What role does the grape variety play in this wine?
The wine is made from 100% Syrah, a variety that achieves exceptional ripeness in the Bündner Herrschaft – thanks to the Föhn influence and limestone-rich soils. Syrah here expresses dark fruits, pepper and spice within an elegantly structured framework.
At what temperature should the wine be served?
The Maienfeld Syrah Barrique reveals its full aromatic potential at a serving temperature of 16-18°C. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to allow the tannins to open up.
When does Maienfeld Syrah Barrique 2023 reach its best drinking maturity?
The 2023 vintage has excellent ageing potential and develops additional depth and complexity with further cellaring. Within its ageing potential of 10 years and more, the tannins continue to gain harmony, while the spice and aromatics unfold with even greater finesse.
What does the Maienfeld Syrah Barrique pair best with?
Ideal with roasted or braised beef, lamb, game dishes, and full-flavoured, mature cheese. The wine harmonises particularly well with spicy, aromatic dishes that mirror its complexity.
What makes the Graubünden wine region particularly special?
Graubünden – and especially the Bündner Herrschaft – benefits from warm Föhn winds that drive the grapes to full ripeness during the short growing season. The limestone soils, altitude, and continental climate lend the wines an alpine freshness and mineral depth that is rarely found elsewhere.
What role does the barrique play in the ageing process?
The combination of new and used barriques allows for a measured wood influence: new barrels contribute vanilla and toasted notes, while used barrels promote micro-oxidation that refines the tannin structure without giving the wine a dominant wood character.
