Grüner Veltliner
Peppery, fresh and unmistakably spicy: grüner veltliner is the flagship of Austrian wine – and a wonderfully versatile companion at the table.
Austria's star grape
Grüner veltliner covers more than a third of Austria's vineyards. Its signature is a fine peppery spice, combined with crisp acidity and aromas of apple, citrus and herbs. From a light heuriger to a great reserve, its range is wide.
A home on the Danube
Its finest sites stretch along the Danube – in the Wachau, Kamptal and Kremstal – as well as in Carnuntum and the Burgenland. On bedrock it turns mineral and taut, on loess rounder and fuller. Great veltliners age remarkably well.
Our Veltliner recommendations
- Grüner Veltliner Carnuntum DAC – fresh and peppery – the classic veltliner character.
- Grüner Veltliner Reserve Carnuntum – the denser reserve, with depth and structure.
- Allacher Grüner Veltliner Burgenland – juicy and invigorating, from the Burgenland.
Veltliner at the table
Few wines are so food-friendly: grüner veltliner suits Wiener schnitzel, asparagus, fish and Asian cuisine – even tricky partners like artichokes. Its spice and acidity make it hugely flexible.
Serving it right
Serve grüner veltliner well chilled, at 8 to 10 °C, and larger reserves a touch warmer. Young wines delight with freshness, mature single-vineyard wines develop a honeyed depth.
