Rioja

Vanilla, ripe cherry and a silky patina: Rioja is Spain's most famous wine region – and the epitome of elegant, barrel-aged reds.

Spain's flagship region

In northern Spain, along the Ebro, lies Rioja. Here tempranillo ripens into wines of fine fruit, velvety tannin and the typical vanilla-and-coconut note from ageing in American oak. Few regions master the art of barrel maturation so completely.

Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva

Rioja classifies its wines by ageing time. Crianza matures at least a year in barrel and shows fruity and fresh. Reserva is aged longer, more complex and rounder. Gran Reserva, made only in the best vintages, spends years in barrel and bottle – profound and long-lived.

Our Rioja recommendations

Rioja at the table

Rioja is a wonderful companion at the table: lamb, tapas, jamón, grilled meats and aged manchego pair ideally. The fine vanilla note of the oak wraps beautifully around savoury dishes.

Serving it right

Serve Rioja at 16 to 18 °C. Crianza can be enjoyed young, while Reserva and Gran Reserva benefit from a little air to unfold their full depth.
