Ungrafted vines have become a rarity on the European continent. In the late 19th century, the phylloxera epidemic destroyed most vineyards across Europe. Today, only a few hectares remain from the pre-phylloxera era. The family-owned Sotero Pintado winery is among the privileged estates that managed to acquire ancient vineyards in the province of Zamora. The vines were planted ungrafted in 1878 and are today true wine jewels. These over 145-year-old ungrafted vines yield only small harvests, resulting in exceptional quality and concentration. The name Totem is derived from totem poles, which serve as monuments in the Northwest Coast cultures of the indigenous peoples of North America.
