Apulien
Sun, sea and powerful reds: Apulia, the heel of the Italian boot, produces some of the warmest and fruitiest wines in the country.
The south of Italy
Apulia (Puglia) is one of Italy's largest wine regions. The hot, sunny climate and sea breeze give the grapes full ripeness – the wines are powerful, velvety and rich in dark fruit.
Primitivo and Negroamaro
The two main grapes shape the region. Primitivo – a relative of Californian zinfandel – yields ample, sweet-edged wines of plum and chocolate. Negroamaro, literally black-bitter, brings dark fruit with a fine bitterness. In Salento both reach their peak.
Our Apulia recommendations
- Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria – the star primitivo – opulent, velvety and deep.
- Le Monache Salice Salentino Riserva – a negroamaro classic – spicy and aged.
- Settebraccia Salento – a powerful Salento cuvée with dark fruit.
Apulia at the table
Apulia's powerful reds suit lamb, grilled meats, savoury braises and aged pecorino. With Mediterranean cooking of olives and tomatoes they are ideal partners.
Serving it right
Serve Apulian reds at 16 to 18 °C. Their velvety tannins and ripe fruit make them approachable – a short aeration is usually enough.
