Piedmont
Mist-shrouded hills, truffles and majestic wines: Piedmont, in north-western Italy, is home to some of the noblest reds in the world.
The kingdom of nebbiolo
In Piedmont, nebbiolo reigns – a grape as demanding as it is magnificent, whose name derives from the autumn mist (nebbia). It yields wines of pale colour, firm tannin and a bewitching aroma of rose, tar and cherry, able to age for decades.
Barolo, Barbaresco and Barbera
Barolo is regarded as the king of wines: powerful, long-lived and profound. Barbaresco, the slightly more elegant queen, usually matures a little earlier. Both are made from nebbiolo. For everyday drinking there is barbera: juicy, fruity and with lively acidity – the unpretentious favourite of the Piedmontese.
Our Piedmont recommendations
- Del Conte Barolo DOCG – the king in the glass – powerful, layered and long-lived.
- Villadoria Barbaresco DOCG – the elegant queen – fine, fragrant and harmonious.
- Almèi Barbera d'Alba Superiore – a juicy everyday pleasure with vivid fruit.
Piedmont at the table
The great nebbioli call for hearty cooking: brasato al Barolo, game and aged hard cheeses such as Castelmagno are classic companions. With a truffle dish, a mature Barolo is an experience. Fruity barbera suits pasta, salami and pizza.
Serving it right
Serve Barolo and Barbaresco at 17 to 18 °C and decant young vintages generously – they need air. Enjoy barbera a little cooler, at around 16 °C.
