Sangiovese
Juicy cherry, fine herbal spice and a refreshing acidity: sangiovese is the soul of Tuscany – and the most-planted grape in Italy.
Italy's most important grape
Sangiovese is the backbone of Tuscan wine culture. Typical are aromas of sour cherry, plum and Mediterranean herbs, carried by lively acidity and firm tannin. Depending on site and ageing, the style ranges from rustic and juicy to noble and long-lived.
From Chianti to Montalcino
In Chianti Classico, sangiovese shows fresh and herbal; in Montalcino as the majestic Brunello; in the Maremma as juicy Morellino. As a single-varietal Toscana IGT it delights too. Few grapes mirror their origin so clearly.
Our Sangiovese recommendations
- Falorni Sangiovese Toscana – single-varietal and juicy – pure cherry fruit.
- Sacello Chianti Classico – a classic chianti – fresh, spicy, harmonious.
- Terrabianca Chianti Classico Gran Selezione – the summit – dense, noble and long-lived.
Sangiovese at the table
With its acidity, sangiovese is the born companion of Italian cuisine: pasta with tomato sauce, bistecca alla fiorentina, salami and aged pecorino are classic partners. Pizza and game pair beautifully too.
Serving it right
Serve sangiovese at 16 to 18 °C. Simple chianti can be enjoyed younger, while Brunello and Gran Selezione benefit from a few years of ageing and a little air.
