Sizilien

Volcanic soils, dazzling sun and ancient vines: Sicily is one of the most exciting wine islands in the world – with wines full of character and warmth.

The largest island in the Mediterranean

Sicily boasts a wine tradition thousands of years old. The Mediterranean climate and the diversity of soils – from limestone to the volcanic lava of Etna – yield wines of great range: powerful reds, fresh whites and unique single-vineyard wines.

Nero d'Avola and Etna

The main red grape is Nero d'Avola: dark, spicy and full-bodied. On the Etna volcano, nerello mascalese gives fine, almost Burgundian reds. Indigenous whites such as grillo and catarratto shine too. Sicily is also a pioneer of organic viticulture.

Our Sicily recommendations

Sicily at the table

Sicily's powerful reds suit pasta alla Norma, grilled vegetables, lamb and savoury hard cheeses. The island's Mediterranean cooking, with aubergines, tomatoes and herbs, is their natural partner.

Serving it right

Serve Sicilian reds at 16 to 18 °C. Their ripe, velvety character makes them instantly approachable – Etna reds benefit from a little air to reveal their finesse.
