The Cabernet Sauvignon · Merlot Wine of Origin Stellenbosch by Eikendal Vineyards is a classically vinified red wine from the heart of South Africa. Producer: Eikendal Vineyards
Since 1981, the winery Eikendal Vineyards, located a few kilometres outside Stellenbosch, has been owned by the Swiss Saager family. The climatic conditions with the nearby Atlantic Ocean and the terroir at the foot of the Helderberg are first class. Sufficient organic matter and minerals in the soils allow the vines to thrive and produce full-bodied, powerful but also multi-faceted and supple wines. The wines are vinified with great care for the grapes and with separate vinification of the individual plots. Between 250,000 and 300,000 bottles of wine leave the 76-hectare estate every year. Eikendal is also Integrity & Sustainability certified – a mark of sustainable winemaking practice in South Africa.

FAQ
What characterises the Cabernet Sauvignon · Merlot from Eikendal stylistically?
The wine combines the powerful structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the velvety suppleness of Merlot. The result is a well-balanced, age-worthy red wine with dark fruit, fine tannins and a long, sweet finish.
How is the Cabernet Sauvignon · Merlot vinified?
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. The wine then matures for 12 months in French barriques. This ageing lends depth, complexity and a subtle woodiness without masking the fruit.
What role do the grape varieties play in this wine?
Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, ageing potential and the typically earthy, dark-fruit-driven aroma. Merlot gives the wine body, softness and a pleasant approachability on the palate.
At what temperature should the wine be served?
A serving temperature of 16° to 18°C is recommended. At this temperature, the aromas and tannin structure develop optimally.
When does the Cabernet Sauvignon · Merlot 2022 reach its peak?
The wine is already enjoyable now and will continue to develop with further cellaring. Up to 8 years of ageing is possible – over time the tannins become finer and the aromas more complex.
What does this wine pair best with?
Excellent with red meat, roasts and robust pasta dishes. It also harmonises beautifully with aged cheeses.
What makes the Stellenbosch region special?
Stellenbosch is regarded as the most prestigious wine region in South Africa. The combination of the nearby Atlantic Ocean's influence, mineral-rich soils at the foot of the Helderberg and a Mediterranean climate creates ideal conditions for concentrated, age-worthy red wines.
What role does the barrique play in the ageing process?
The twelve-month ageing in French barriques integrates subtle wood notes, rounds off the tannins and gives the wine an additional dimension of depth. The French origin of the wood ensures a finer, more elegant woodiness.
