Totem Viñas Prefiloxéricas - Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León
The Totem Viñas Prefiloxéricas by Bodegas y Viñedos Sotero Pintado is an extraordinary Spanish red wine from Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León. It originates from ungrafted Tempranillo vines over 100 years old – one of the last living witnesses to European viticulture before the phylloxera crisis. Powerful, complex and of unparalleled depth, this wine is a piece of wine history in the glass.
Producer: Bodegas y Viñedos Sotero Pintado
The family-run estate Bodegas y Viñedos Sotero Pintado is located in the province of Zamora, in the heart of Castile and León. On the European continent, own-rooted vines have become a rarity. The devastating phylloxera crisis of the late 19th century destroyed almost all European vineyards. Only a few hectares survived the catastrophe. Sotero Pintado is among the privileged producers in Zamora province that were able to acquire these ancient vineyards. The ungrafted vines were planted in 1878 – today over 145-year-old wine jewels. Their small yields concentrate into extraordinary quality. The name "Totem" is derived from the totem poles of the northwest coast cultures of North America – a symbol of memory and permanence that befits the character of these historic vines.

FAQ about Totem Viñas Prefiloxéricas
What defines the style of Totem Viñas Prefiloxéricas?
The wine combines the power and concentration of ancient own-rooted vines with the elegant structure of a carefully barrique-aged red wine. Dark fruit, spice depth and integrated tannins define the style.
How is Totem Viñas Prefiloxéricas vinified?
The grapes are hand-harvested and then aged for twelve months in French oak barriques, followed by a further twelve months of bottle maturation before release.
What role does the Tempranillo grape play in this wine?
100% Tempranillo from vines over 100 years old and ungrafted: these vines yield only tiny amounts, but with extraordinary concentration. Tempranillo delivers ripe red and dark fruits, spices and a robust tannic structure.
At what temperature should this wine be served?
Totem Viñas Prefiloxéricas reveals its full aromatic spectrum best at 16–18°C. We recommend decanting the bottle for one hour before serving.
When does Totem Viñas Prefiloxéricas 2020 reach its best drinking maturity?
The 2020 vintage is currently in an early, but already very attractive drinking phase and will continue to develop within its ageing potential of 10–15 years, gaining depth, complexity and expression.
What does Totem Viñas Prefiloxéricas pair best with?
Ideal with roasts, game, roast beef and strong cheeses. Its body and tannic structure make it the perfect companion for rich meat dishes and aromatically spiced cheese varieties.
What makes the Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León region special?
The vast highlands of Castile with their continental climate – hot summers, cold nights, harsh winters – encourage wines with natural acidity, deep colour and pronounced fruit character. The region is home to some of the oldest vine stocks in Spain.
What role does barrique ageing play?
The 12-month ageing in French oak barriques gives the wine fine wood notes, a velvety texture and additional complexity, without overpowering the fruit characters of the old vines.
