Magnum & Grossflaschen

A magnum is more than doubly festive: large bottles are not just a centrepiece – they let the wine age more slowly and harmoniously.

Why size matters

In a magnum (1.5 litres), the same amount of oxygen under the cork is spread over twice as much wine. The wine therefore ages more slowly and evenly – it stays young longer and develops particularly finely. Connoisseurs say: the magnum is the ideal format for ageing.

The formats at a glance

The half bottle (0.375 l) is ideal for two glasses, the standard bottle (0.75 l) the classic. The magnum (1.5 l) equals two bottles, the double magnum (3 l) four. Large formats often carry resounding names such as Jeroboam or Methuselah – perfect for celebrations.

Our large-format recommendations

Large formats at the table

Magnums are made for big gatherings: a centrepiece on any celebration table and a guarantee of enough wine for all. An age-worthy red in magnum is also a wonderful gift for a birth, wedding or milestone birthday – to be opened later.

Serving it right

Allow a little more time to decant a magnum – the larger volume benefits from air. Chill or bring large bottles to temperature in good time, as they take longer.
