Nebbiolo

Pale colour, mighty tannin and a bewitching bouquet of rose and tar: nebbiolo is the most demanding and noble grape of Piedmont.

The king grape of Piedmont

Its name comes from the autumn fog (nebbia) that shrouds the Langhe hills at harvest. Nebbiolo yields wines of deceptively pale colour but enormous tannin, high acidity and an unmistakable aroma of rose, cherry, tar and leather.

Barolo, Barbaresco and beyond

Nebbiolo produces the great Piedmontese: the powerful Barolo and the slightly more approachable Barbaresco. As Langhe Nebbiolo it shows ready earlier and more easygoing. In the north too, in Gattinara and the Valtellina, it makes fine wines.

Our Nebbiolo recommendations

Nebbiolo at the table

The mighty nebbioli call for hearty cooking: brasato, game, truffle dishes and aged hard cheeses are ideal partners. The lighter Langhe Nebbiolo also suits pasta and salumi.

Serving it right

Serve nebbiolo at 17 to 18 °C. Young Barolo and Barbaresco benefit greatly from generous aeration in a decanter. Mature bottles reveal their complexity on their own.
