Syrah / Shiraz

Dark fruit, black pepper and a hint of violet: syrah – known as shiraz in the New World – is among the most powerful and spicy of red wines.

Power and spice

Syrah brings a deep, dark colour, dense blackberry-and-plum fruit and a marked peppery note to the glass. Depending on climate, the style ranges from elegant and spicy to opulent and warming. Its firm but ripe tannins give it structure and ageing potential.

From the Rhône to the world

Its classic home is the northern Rhône, where appellations such as Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie set the standard. As shiraz it shapes Australia with opulent, fruit-driven wines. Sicily and Switzerland also craft spicy, expressive syrahs.

Our Syrah recommendations

Syrah at the table

With its power, syrah is the ideal partner for hearty dishes: grills, lamb, game and braises all suit it. It also pairs beautifully with savoury hard cheeses and herb-rich Mediterranean cooking.

Serving it right

Serve syrah at 16 to 18 °C. Younger, tannic wines benefit from a little air in a decanter. In a large glass its spicy aromatics unfold most beautifully.
